Purpose
Facing the ever-growing climate change impacts and extreme events along with the energy crisis, economic constraints, new regulatory requirements and rising public concerns, local governments and water operators of megacities are being increasingly challenged with the critical needs to establish climate adaptation policies and assess best practices for their water systems management as well as to accelerate the deployment of innovative solutions for improving their water security and upgrading the resilience of the metropolitan water ecosystems. The climate change adaptation calls for consumers education to engage a societal crisis preparedness culture, as well as effective measures for meeting emerging regulations for reducing GHG / carbon emission and striving to achieve energy neutrality and demand control. Within this context, while the Megacities in the Euro-North American Region (ENAR) experience a variety of climate change impacts and face different hydrological, socio-cultural, environmental, economic, technological, regulatory and operational conditions, their collaboration, exchanges and experience sharing present a great interest for leveraging the development, demonstration and integration of innovative solutions for facing metropolitan climate adaptation challenges.
Following upon the recommendations of the round table panel sessions organized by MAWAC ENAR as part of the EAUMEGA 2022 conference, the purpose of this Water Research & Innovation (WRI) Workshop is to provide the forum for such an experience sharing among the megacities, bringing together their government officers, policy decision makers, water operators and researchers in order to share climate impacts challenges of each megacity, its experience of adaptation strategies, R&D priority needs and current programs, as well as early monitoring results of innovative solutions and their environmental, societal and economic impacts assessment. The goal is to explore synergistical opportunities for leveraging experience and resources for current and future WRI programs and accelerate the deployment of innovative solutions for the metropolitan adaptation needs.
Organization
The MAWAC-ENAR Water Research & Innovation (WRI) Workshop, which is co-organized by NYU and NYCDEP under the auspices of UNESCO, as the MAWaC Secretariat, with the collaboration of MGP (Metropolis of Greater Paris), the ARCEAU-IdF Association, the LEESU Research Center, and the W-SMART Association. The WRI Workshop will be hosted by NYCDEP and NYU at NYU Polytechnic Institute, 6 Metrotech Center Brooklyn, NY 11201 on March 20 & 21, 2023.
Main Workshop Objectives
- Provide a stakeholders’ WRI overview of the priority challenges of each megacity, its experience of climate impacts adaptation, R&D needs and programs, and assessment of early monitoring of innovative solutions;
- Explore the synergistic opportunities for leveraging current and future R&D programs, including analytical/numerical studies, “beta” testing of innovative solutions in operators’ sites, smart monitoring systems, their early deployment monitoring as well as financing and consumers’ education strategies;
- Support collaborative development of inter-city R&D projects to optimize resources and accelerate the adaptation and demonstration of innovative solutions to the local needs using current digital environments;
- Explore the best way forward to establish a strategic collaborative framework for leveraging experience and resources for R&D collaborative projects focused on the megacities’ climate adaptation priority needs.

the purpose is to explore the best way for efficiently engaging strategic stakeholders’ partnerships and inter-city collaboration on mutually identified challenges for leveraging programs, pilot site demonstrations, experience and resources and accelerate the integration and deployment of innovative solutions. For this purpose, each breakout session will be focused on priority challenge(s) of common interest, as identified by the megacities following their Metropolitan WRI Overview presentations. It will be chaired by the Moderator(s) of a City Overview session and will involve the experts from the different megacities interested in the identified challenge(s). The outcome of each breakout session is expected to include: o WRI Challenge(s) identified for potential inter-city exchanges & collaboration; o The purpose, objectives of the participating cities and scope of collaboration (e.g. lessons learned; data sharing; technology demonstrations; others); o Inter-city Information/data sharing mode, platform and security challenges; o The way forward strategy, resources and milestones for inter-city collaboration; o The potential impacts and contribution to the MAWAC goals and Metropolitan SDG Outcome of each session will be presented in the Way Forward session by the moderator |
12:00 – 12:45 | The Way Forward –
The Moderators of the breakout sessions will briefly present (5 min) the outcome of the sessions for plenary discussion. It will summarize the proposed strategic inter-city collaborative framework for leveraging experience and resources for the identified WRI projects, focused on the megacities’ climate adaptation priority needs.
