The AG “RTWQM” addresses specifically developments that strengthen the interaction between “sensor technologies” and “data analyses & monitoring tools” to safeguard or improve water quality aspects in the different water using sectors following the smart water concept described under 4.7 and 4.9 of the EIP on Water SIP. Included are all sensors and analyzers that can measure water quality parameters (physical, chemical or biological) within a reasonable time and are working in an autonomous way with low maintenance requirements. The RTWQM concept includes the retrieval, transmission, processing and validation of raw data, to convert it into useful information.
Objectives and expected results of the Action group are:
To identify the current State of the Art and best practices, including soft sensor systems.
To identify the water managers’ and users’ needs in terms of RTWQM.
To foster RTWQM techniques in operational applications for improved water management and resource efficiency in: water body protection, drinking water and wastewater.
To initiate the use of advanced data processing and modeling tools to add value to real time data and provide useful information for decision-making.
To act as a bridge between promising RTD results towards reliable and robust industrial products, ready to market, matching water sector needs with RTD offer in terms of RTWQM.
To identify market opportunities and address barriers.
The potential for RTWQM is very high because of the need to preserve water resources and to improve process efficiency in water supply and sanitation. For this one needs knowledge of the time evolution of water quality in a continuous way, thus allowing enhanced decision-making. The main innovation contributions will be: the definition of new affordable monitoring strategies and the enhancement of the innovation chain for RTWQM technologies.
The market for RTWQM solutions can be divided in 3 main areas of application:
Resource efficiency, in terms of chemical dosing and energy, in water treatment processes for both water supply and waste water;
Early warning systems to detect pollution of surface water, ground water catchments and drinking water resources;
Control networks to monitor industrial and urban waste water discharges and water reuse systems.
The partners of the consortium together cover all the specific European climates, different technologies and functions across the value chain, from research up to standardisation bodies. In addition co-operation with other AG’s is foreseen especially with the Action Group on Industrial Water Re-use and Recycling.
